Fresh off leading the Dillard girls' basketball team to its third consecutive state title, legendary Panthers coach Marcia Pinder has been named the RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA National High School Coach of the Year.

Pinder, the winningest coach in state history with a record of 804-175, will be invited to coach in the WBCA High School All-America Game on March 31 in Denver as part of the award. The game will be played at 6:30 p.m. as part of the events on NCAA Women's Final Four weekend.

Siena’s Martens “disappointed,” looks forward to next year

Wednesday, September 14, 2011 | 6:25 pm

Davis Martens said he'll need four months to recover from hip surgery. (Cindy Schultz/Times Union)

ALBANY – Junior forward Davis Martens, bothered by right hip pain all last season, finally did something about it.

He had surgery on Aug. 30 to repair a torn labrum, a procedure that will keep him out this season. He’ll have two years of eligibility left.

Siena said the labrum tear resulted from a congenital condition called Femoral Acetabular Impingement Syndrome.

Martens, who is 6-foot-9, said the injury took a while to diagnose.

“I played with it all (last) season,” Martens explained at Siena’s Sneak Preview today. “I tore it, I think, at the beginning of last season and then I think it gradually got worse. After the season, we didn’t really know what it was. At first, I thought I tore my groin or something but then it gradually kept getting worse. It was clear it wasn’t my groin and it was just something I really had to take care of.”

Martens, who was on crutches today, had the surgery done by Dr. Shankar Das at the Bone and Joint Center in Albany.

“Dr. Das said it went very well,” Martens said. “It was a big tear, bigger than he expected. But I’m good so far. I can put a little pressure on it now.”

Martens said the rehabilitation should take four months until he’s fully recovered, depending on how he responds to treatment.

“Even better than normal,” said Martens, asked if he’ll be his old self. “Getting a little upgrade there.”

Martens averaged 2.2 points and 1.8 rebounds last season, his playing time decreasing as the season progressed.

“I thought he made a jump last year,” Siena coach Mitch Buonaguro said. “A 6-9, athletic kid. It hurts (to lose him). He’s got experience, too.”

Martens is dealing with his disappointment by thinking about what the future has in store.

“I’m disappointed, but I’m happy I had this done now so I can come back and contribute next year, big-time, and still have a year left after that.”
