Former Ensworth star named to Walker watch list
Wednesday, August 3, 2011 | 2:21 am
Tulane running back Orleans Darkwa, a former Ensworth star, has been named to the Doak Walker Award watch list.
Named in honor of former All-American and Hall of Fame inductee Doak Walker, the award is presented annually to the nation’s top running back. A total of 52 running backs were named to the watch list.
Darkwa was named to the watch list after setting a Tulane freshman rushing record a year ago by tallying 925 yards and 11 touchdowns on 184 carries (5.0 avg.) last season.
In addition, Darkwa caught 17 passes for 155 yards, threw two scoring strikes of his own and returned eight kickoffs for 150 yards.
He led the Green Wave in rushing attempts (184), yards (925), yards per carry (5.0) and touchdowns (11) while his 1,230 all-purpose yards also paced the squad. His rushing total from the 2010 season surpassed the former Tulane rookie rushing record of 890 set by current Pittsburgh Steeler Mewelde Moore back in 2000.
The Doak Walker Award dates back to 1990 and its previous winners include Heisman Trophy winners Rashaan Salaam (Colorado, 1994), Eddie George (Ohio State, 1995), Ron Dayne (Wisconsin, 1999) and Reggie Bush (USC, 2005) along with two-time winners Ricky Williams (Texas, 1997 and 1998) and Darren McFadden (Arkansas, 2006 and 2007).
Walker was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1959 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986.

Won 2 Watch: 2011 Zurich Classic of New Orleans
Monday, April 25, 2011 | 4:12 pm![]()
Congratulations to Brandt Snedeker for winning the 2011 The Heritage in a playoff over one of last weeks picks, Luke Donald. This week, the PGA Tour is headed to the Bayou for the 2011 Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where 3 of the top 10 players in the world are here to include Luke Donald, Steve Stricker and Graeme McDowell. The remainder are still on their self imposed hiatus following the Masters, with the intention of returning next week for the 2011 Wells Fargo Championship.
With that said, this is a great opportunity for a tour player to win against a limited field. The question is, will this year’s winner be a seasoned veteran or will another first time winner emerge like Nick Watney, when he won the 2008 Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
I’ll cover both angles in this week’s edition of Won 2 Watch, so let’s get started.
KJ Choi: A PGA Tour veteran of 11 years, Choi has uncharacteristically remained out of the winner’s circle for the past 3 years, with his last PGA Tour victory coming at the 2008 Sony Open. Choi has battled his putter throughout his career, utilizing the oversized grip as his mainstay. However recently, he made some changes to his putting stroke and has been rewarded thus far in 2011 with three top 10 finishes, two of them coming in his last two starts. Choi was also in contention through 3 rounds of the Masters before fading to a T8 on Sunday and was a past champion at the 2002 Compaq Classic of New Orleans; therefore all signs are pointing to the veteran Choi this week.
David Toms: Louisiana native David Toms could use a little home cooking…and it’s not a bad choice to have when you’re talking about New Orleans. Toms has not won since the 2006 Sony Open but that is not without having a number of chances over the past several years. Toms fell short at the 2010 Wyndham Championship behind a historic win by Arjun Atwal. Leading the 2010 McGladrey Classic entering the 3rd round, Toms was outpaced over the weekend, finishing T4. In the off season, Toms replaced Louis Oosthuizen in the 2010 Grand Slam of Golf and played against Graeme McDowell, Martin Kaymer and Ernie Els. Leading entering the final round, Toms came up short to Ernie Els. Fortunately for Toms, his game is trending in the right direction as he has posted 2 top 10 finishes thus far in 2011; so take a look at the Louisiana native this week.
Chris Couch: Couch is having a great year, posting 4 top 10 finishes in 2011 and is coming off a T14 last week at The Heritage. Couch has good memories at the Zurich Classic, considering that it was his 1st and only PGA Tour victory in 2006. By the look at the way Couch is playing this year, he may be setting the blueprint for his 2nd tour victory.
Jeff Overton: I guess “Boom Baby” hasn’t had much to say since the 2010 Ryder Cup, even though great things were expected out of him when he qualified for the team (along with Rickie Fowler) without a PGA Tour win. Overton is clearly off to a slow start in 2011 with only one top 10 finish in nine tournament starts. However, the great thing about golf is that you always have next week to redeem yourself and Overton enters the 2011 Zurich Classic with past success, posting a T13 in 2009 and a 2nd place finish in 2010. Therefore with a few rolled putts this week, maybe “Boom Baby” will have something more to say.
Jason Dufner: Dufner shows up every once in awhile to make you ask yourself, “now where did he come from?” At the 2010, BMW Championship, Dufner was in contention for his 1st PGA Tour win and at the 2011 Waste Management Open, he found himself in a playoff with the eventual winner, Mark Wilson. Dufner has a good history at the Zurich Classic with a T9 and T7 finish in 2009 & 2010 and is coming off a solid T14 last week at The Heritage, so watch out for Duff this week.
Until next time…all the best on your selections and I’ll catch up with everyone next week for the 2011 Wells Fargo Championship.
