Nationals sign Michael Morse to a multi-year deal
Saturday, January 21, 2012 | 1:42 amThe Washington Nationals signed OF/1B Michael Morse to a multi-year deal today. By signing Morse now the Nationals avoid arbitration, which could have resulted in Morse getting even more money than he did. [And we don't know what he got yet.] Morse, who turns 30 in March, had easily the best season of his Major League career last year, batting .303, with a .360 OBP, .550 SLG, .889 OPS, 139 OPS+ in 146 games. He hit 31 home runs, drove in 95 runs , and cracked 158 hits. Basically, he had the season Jayson Werth was supposed to have. More [...]

Latest Washington Nationals rumors
Monday, December 5, 2011 | 6:04 amUPDATE: Bill Ladson reports that the Nationals are not all that interested in CJ Wilson. Quite interesting given all the other sources. Going to be an interesting few days. —– With the Winter Meetings set to kick off tomorrow, many eyes are focused on two NL East teams, the Nationals and the Marlins, both expected to be significant players. As stated prior, the highest priority for the Nationals is obtaining an inning eating veteran starting pitcher and a lead off hitting center fielder. As for starting pitching, the Nationals are reportedly interested in Mark Buehrle and CJ Wilson. The latest [...]

Nationals sweep double header from Brewers, improve to 8-7
Monday, April 18, 2011 | 7:42 am
The Washington Nationals continue to put together an impressive start to the 2011 season. Today, the Nats swept a double header from Milwaukee, improving their record to over .500 at 8-7, just 2.5 games away from the NL East leading Philadelphia Phillies.
The Nats beat the Brewers 8-4 in Game 1. Danny Espinosa powered the Nationals offense with a 3 run home run in the fifth inning, his 2nd homer of the season. Ivan Rodriguez followed suit, hammering a 3 run homer just one inning later. Ian Desmond and Rick Ankiel both had tow hits each. The Nats got a quality start from Jason Marquis (1-0), who picked up his first win of the season. Marquis threw 7 innings and allowed 9 hits, 2 runs, and struck out 4 batters. In his third start of the season, Marquis lowered his season ERA to 3.27. Chad Gaudin had another rough outing from the bullpen, pitching .2 innings and allowing 1 hit, 2 walks, and 2 runs.
The Nats beat the Brewers in game two 5-1. Again, Espinosa powered the Nationals with a 3 run triple, giving him 6 RBI for the day. For the season, Espinosa has 14 RBI leading the Nationals and also sitting at 2nd overall in the National League. Jerry Hairston, Jr. started the Nationals offense off with a solo home run in the second inning. Adam LaRoche hit his 2nbd home run of the season in the 8th inning to cap off the Nationals 5-1 win. Ian Desmond had another two hit game, going 4 for 8 on the day. Hairston Jr. was 3 for 3 with the home run and 2 runs scored.
The Nats got a masterful performance on the mound from veteran starter Livan Hernandez. Livo tossed 7 innings, scattering 6 hits and allowing just 1 run. Hernandez lowered his season ERA to 2.28. Drew Storen picked up his first save of the season, throwing 2 scoreless innings.
The Nats improved to 8-7, sit 2.5 out from the Phillies, and have won 7 of their last 10. The win also gave the Nationals a 3 game series sweep over the Brewers.
Next up: Washington begins a three game series in St. Louis against the Cardinals on Tuesday.

Nationals Briefing: Rotation set for Nats?
Monday, February 21, 2011 | 12:56 amAccording to Washington Nationals manager Jim Riggelman, the starting 5 rotation slots are nearly set for the Nationals.
Riggleman said Sunday that Livan Hernandez, John Lannan, Jordan Zimmermann, Jason Marquis and Tom Gorzelanny will likely start the season in the rotation. Gaudin will start the team’s first spring training game on Feb. 28 against the Mets in a bid to shake things up.
Hernandez will start the next day when the Mets visit the Nationals.
Granted, Spring Training and pre-season games have a tendency at times to mix things up. But, looking at that rotation, it is pretty much what one would expect. Craig Stammen and Garrett Mock are also battling for starting slots, but they both may very well be headed to the Nationals bullpen. Yunesky Maya and Ross Detwiler are also in the running for one of the five slots. Not in that consideration is Luis Atilano. Atilano was out-righted to Syracuse (AAA).
Nats GM Mike Rizzo is felling pretty good about his 2011 Washington Nationals. He better be, because his stamp is all over this club.
I feel good about the team. We energized the ballclub. I think we are a faster, more athletic, defensive-oriented club. I think we are going to find ways to score runs. We are going to play good defense. It’s going to make our pitchers better. The bullpen is strong. We feel good where we are at.
Besides the defensive and offensive upswing the Nationals will get from big time signee Jayson Werth, the Werth signing had an even more significant meaning.
The Jayson Werth signing made us a better baseball team. That will make players want to come here. What it did prove is, we are here to win games. We have an organization that is willing to spend money to acquire talent. We showed it, not only in the last two drafts, but in the free-agent market. I think word of mouth travels. I know talking to people in the industry, the players have really good things to say about the Washington Nationals — the way we treat our people. That’s a big important thing because players talk. They talk to each other. What they are saying about us is very positive.
Go read the rest. Good interview by our friend Bill Ladson.
Bryce Harper has arrived for Spring Training. Welcome to the Nationals young man. Harper took batting practice with the South Carolina Gamecocks today, as his brother, Bryan Harper, kicks off his collegiate baseball career.
