Mavericks Trade Pick #26 for Rudy Fernandez and What It Means

Friday, July 8, 2011 | 7:44 am

I’m going to skip the normal news intro. You know what happened. Let’s get into what this Mavs roster looks like now.

PG Jason Kidd

SG Rudy Fernandez

SF Caron Butler*

PF Dirk Nowitzki

C Tyson Chandler*

This roster happens IF the Mavericks re-sign JJ Barea, Tyson Chandler, and Caron Butler.

Now, let’s talk problems.

1. Mavs are log jammed at shooting guard

Five shooting guards on the roster. Far more than any other position. Not sure if the Mavs are collecting for a rainy day, or if one or two are trade bait pieces for next year. Whatever the case, too many roster spots are taken by specialist shooting guards. And by specialist, I mean incomplete.

2. Without JJ Barea, who’s going to give Jason Kidd a rest?

JJ is a perfect fit for this Mavs roster, and losing him would be a significant blow. Roddy B has shown he’s not a point guard, and there’s no one else in the lineup who can serve as the leader on the floor when Kidd is resting his aging limbs. Not having a legit backup point guard willl kill the Mavs chances to compete in the playoffs next year.

3. Can we get a legit power forward on this team?

Brandon Bass is the last power forward I remember having on this team who actually played like a power forward. And he was undersized. I realize that Dirk is a unique player and he’s going to get lots of playing time. But someone competent, and perhaps a bit more traditional, would be nice in the backup PF role. Right now, the whole lineup has to shift when Dirk is out, possibly leaving both small forwards on the floor at the same time: Butler and Marion, or a small lineup of Kidd, Barea, Terry, Marion/Buttler, and Chandler.

4. Two Starters are Free Agents

Can the Mavs win another championship with Brendan Haywood as the starting center? No. Tyson Chandler brings too much to the table in his enthusiasm, energy, positivity, and work ethic. Without Chandler, the Mavs need to scratch it all and go after another superstar.

Caron Butler isn’t necessary to win a championship, obviously. He IS, however, the easiest improvement this year’s champions can make to a championship roster. Without Butler, Mavs have ANOTHER position without backups. Theoretically, you can put Brewer in the small forward spot. He’s tall, but thin. He could handle it.

What we know from the trade is that Dallas is more interested in making a second championship push than in raising up a new generation of talent. Roddy B may be trade bait at this point. I give him one more year to show improvement here in Dallas before the Mavs cut bait.

Mavericks 96, Lakers 94: One that got away

Tuesday, May 3, 2011 | 1:31 pm

LOS ANGELES — The Lakers were rolling. Things were easy.

Ultimately, that may have been their downfall.

Once again unable to stand prosperity, the Lakers built a 16-point lead early in the fourth quarter, and gave 13 of those points back in little more than five minutes, setting the stage for Dallas’ last-minute victory in the playoff series opener.

“It took a lot of energy out of us,” Phil Jackson said of that turnaround, “and gave them a lot of energy.”

Three of the Lakers’ 11 turnovers’ came during that 17-4 run by the Mavericks. The Lakers also missed four of six shots.

“We had quite a bit of turnovers in that stretch,” Kobe Bryant said. “We’re not taking care of the basketball, making appropriate plays, and it allowed them to get into transition. They got easy buckets. On top of that, our rotations were slow — late — and it gave their shooters easy opportunities.”

It was a point where the Lakers let up instead of bearing down, despite discussing just that prospect.

“We made a point to talk about that,” Bryant said. “Because we’ve been in games like that, where things are grooving, and kind of easy, and then you’re in a dogfight. Turnovers do that. We missed some pot shots, too, that we should’ve made.”

Pau Gasol, who committed a key foul and then had a turnover in the final seconds, agreed.

“We talked about that at halftime, actually,” Gasol said, “that if things are coming too easily, we have to maintain our focus and aggressiveness, and stick to the things that are working for us, and don’t get carried away, and make sure we put them away.”

Instead, he said “we got a little bit carried away, and we didn’t make good decisions, and we paid the price defensively, and gave them a chance that way.

“We were maybe a little too excited at that particular time.”

BIg giveaway: Bryant also explained what happened on his crucial turnover with 21 seconds left and the Lakers up 94-93, when he drove and kicked the ball back, only to have it intercepted by Jason Terry.

“I saw Jason trailing,” he said. “I saw him coming over to double, and made the assumption that he was still following, so I thought I had (Derek Fisher) wide open. But he broke it off and cut off the passing lane.

“It was a good read by him.”
