Ex-Giles County football star hits snag at Ole Miss

Friday, January 27, 2012 | 9:51 pm

Bo Wallace, a Mr. Football winner at Giles County and The Tennessean’s Player of the Year in 2009, has gotten off to a bit of a rough start at Ole Miss.

A midyear signee earlier this month after a record-setting fall at East Mississippi Community College, Wallace was cited on Jan. 19 for underage possession of alcohol.

As reported by the Jackson (Miss.) Clarion-Ledger on Wednesday:

Wallace was issued a post-arrest citation for MIP at 10:15 p.m. Thursday at Rooster’s Blues House on the Square, according to Oxford Police Chief Mike Martin.

Wallace signed with Ole Miss earlier this month after a fantastic season at East Mississippi Community College.

He set national records for passing yards (4,604) and touchdowns (53). The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Wallace has three years of eligibility remaining.

Wallace is expected to be near the top, if not at the top, of Ole Miss’ depth chart for spring practice.

UPDATE: In a statement, coach Hugh Freeze said that we was aware of the citation and that he “will address it internally.”

Anita Burke hits career milestone

Wednesday, January 18, 2012 | 10:37 am

Anita Burke knows how to win basketball games. On Tuesday night, Burke did just that for the 400th time in her storied coaching career when her Hughes squad defeated Woodward, 73-24.
“It’s really very exciting for me, achieving this milestone at my alma mater” said Burke, who has spent 15 of her 26-year coaching career at the helm of the Hughes girls’ basketball program. “I never thought I’d return to Hughes but I realized there were a lot of young ladies that I could help through basketball so I came back.”
Burke, a graduate of Hughes High School (1976) and former University of Cincinnati standout performer, has won 12 league championships and has been voted coach of the nine times while pacing the sidelines at Hughes. She currently ranks 35th in OHSAA history for career coaching victories.
Burke, who was inducted into the Greater Cincinnati Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame in 1992, will be enshrined in the Cincinnati Public School Hall of Fame on April 12.

‘Sneaky’ Smith wins seventh title, hits milestone

Monday, May 30, 2011 | 10:07 am

David Lipscomb pitcher Keith Smith is ready to reveal the secret of his dad’s success.

Smith’s father, Ernie, won his seventh state championship and 800th career game with a 9-4 victory over Lexington in the Class AA baseball final at MTSU on Friday. He also won his 800th game in girls basketball this season.

“He’s sneaky,” Keith kidded. “He’s real quiet, but he’s got tricks up his sleeve. You never know when we’re going to run a squeeze (bunt). He’ll come out and yell at the umpire just to get in the other team’s head or something.

“He has a great ability of working with kids and earning respect and getting players that want to play for him. I know that I’m speaking for myself and I’m also speaking for my teammates, every time we’re on the field we give it 100 percent for him because he gives 100 percent for us.”

Keith, the District 10-AA player of the year, has signed with Freed-Hardeman.

Lipscomb went back to the 2001 uniforms this season, hoping it would give them good luck from the Mustangs’ state title that year.

The Mustangs knew their coach’s milestone was getting closer as the state tournament drew near.

“We actually talked about it before the state tournament,” Lipscomb leadoff hitter Pete Trollinger said. “We were like, “If we win these four games, we’ll get him to 800,’ and it happened. It’s just insane.”
