SRJC Men’s Soccer Set For Season, Team Loaded With Former Empire Prep Players
Monday, August 22, 2011 | 12:55 amPosted By Press Democrat Staff Writer Michael Coit:
Retooling for a conference title defense, the Santa Rosa Junior College men’s soccer squad opens play with an exhibition at Sonoma State on Sunday.
Returning only four starters, Santa Rosa has been busy mixing in players to find a rotation that will lead the Bear Cubs back to the California Community College Athletic Association playoffs. Santa Rosa is loaded with former empire prep players
Last season, Santa Rosa won its fourth consecutive Big 8 Conference title and reached the state quarterfinals. The Bear Cubs were a deep, talented and experienced team, running up an impressive 17-2-3 record.
“So we lost a lot of guys, but I think we’ve filled in admirably. We also had a lot of guys pushing for time last year,” said Santa Rosa coach Marty Kinahan.
While younger this season, Santa Rosa still should feature a strong offense that keeps the ball on the ground and combines passes to pressure opponents.
The midfield is loaded and a solid back line should help keep Santa Rosa in games.
Santa Rosa faces a tough opening test in Sonoma State. Game time is 12 p.m. Sunday in Rohnert Park.
On Thursday, the Seawolves, a NCAA Division II team, defeated San Francisco, A Division I program, in Rohnert Park. Sonoma State was ranked ranked No. 21 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division II preseason Top 25 poll.
Before entering regular season play, Santa Rosa also plays exhibitions at San Francisco State and at Humboldt State, both NCAA Division II teams. Santa Rosa’s home opener is Sept. 6 against Las Positas.
The tough road exhibition contests should help the Bear Cubs come together for another successful season, Kinahan said.
“I think it’s really, really positive,” he said.

Former Ensworth star named to Walker watch list
Wednesday, August 3, 2011 | 2:21 am
Tulane running back Orleans Darkwa, a former Ensworth star, has been named to the Doak Walker Award watch list.
Named in honor of former All-American and Hall of Fame inductee Doak Walker, the award is presented annually to the nation’s top running back. A total of 52 running backs were named to the watch list.
Darkwa was named to the watch list after setting a Tulane freshman rushing record a year ago by tallying 925 yards and 11 touchdowns on 184 carries (5.0 avg.) last season.
In addition, Darkwa caught 17 passes for 155 yards, threw two scoring strikes of his own and returned eight kickoffs for 150 yards.
He led the Green Wave in rushing attempts (184), yards (925), yards per carry (5.0) and touchdowns (11) while his 1,230 all-purpose yards also paced the squad. His rushing total from the 2010 season surpassed the former Tulane rookie rushing record of 890 set by current Pittsburgh Steeler Mewelde Moore back in 2000.
The Doak Walker Award dates back to 1990 and its previous winners include Heisman Trophy winners Rashaan Salaam (Colorado, 1994), Eddie George (Ohio State, 1995), Ron Dayne (Wisconsin, 1999) and Reggie Bush (USC, 2005) along with two-time winners Ricky Williams (Texas, 1997 and 1998) and Darren McFadden (Arkansas, 2006 and 2007).
Walker was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1959 and the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986.

Former Siena assistant Finch dies
Saturday, July 30, 2011 | 10:06 amSiena announced today that former assistant coach Norm Finch died this morning.
He served as a volunteer and then part-time coach under former Siena coach Mike Deane from 1989-94.
Here’s the Siena news release:
Former Siena men’s basketball assistant coach Norm Finch passed away Friday morning at 6 a.m. Finch served on the Saints’ staff from 1989-94 under Mike Deane, a five-year tenure that coincided with one of the great eras in program history.
“We are very saddened about Norm’s passing and extend the condolences of the Siena community to his family,” director of athletics John D’Argenio said. “He was an important part of the success of Siena basketball during the early 90s. His basketball knowledge was certainly an asset to Mike, the players and other assistant coaches. His wit and outlook on life made for a great team environment.”
Finch joined Deane’s staff as a volunteer assistant in 1989 shortly after the program made its mark on the national stage with an upset of Stanford in its initial NCAA appearance. He was elevated to part-time status in 1991, and concluded his run with the program by helping Siena advance all the way to the semifinals of the 1994 NIT at Madison Square Garden.
Finch graduated from Niagara University with an English degree in 1956. He served as head coach at St. Patrick’s Central High School in Catskill, N.Y. for 26 years from 1963-88, winning two sectional titles and five conference championships. His 1983 team finished second in the New York State Championships. Finch served as head coach at Ticonderoga High School in 1988-89 before joining the Saints.
A full obituary will be published in Saturday’s Albany Times Union.

Former Petaluma Catcher, SSU Player Picked In Baseball Draft
Tuesday, July 5, 2011 | 4:10 amPosted By Press Democrat Staff Writer Michael Coit:
A great season became even better for University of California catcher Chadd Krist as the former Petaluma High standout was picked by the Chicago White Sox in the 13th round of the Major League Baseball draft Tuesday.
One round earlier, Sonoma State offensive force O’Koyea Dickson went to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Sonoma State shortstop Alex Todd was selected in the 27th round by the Houston Astros.
The earliest Empire player drafted was former Analy pitcher Nick Mutz in the ninth round by the Los Angeles Angels.
Krist is the starting catcher for a Bears team that has advanced to the super regionals of the NCAA baseball championship tournament. Cal plays a best-of-three series with Dallas Baptist at Santa Clara University starting Saturday.
The 411th overall draft pick, Krist is batting .306 with a team-leading 25 doubles. Krist is second in runs batted in with 40.
A junior, Krist was named to the all-Pac 10 first team for a second straight season. Krist was an All-Empire player at Petaluma High.
As the 374th overall pick, Dickson became the 38th player in SSU baseball history to be drafted.
In his first season at Sonoma State, the San Francisco native led the Seawolves in five offensive categories — runs scored, hits, home runs, total bases and slugging percentage. Dickson’s 11 home runs this season was second-best in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
Dickson, a junior, led the conference in runs scored with 61 and had 52 runs batted in, second in the league to teammate Kyle Jones.
The conference Newcomer of the Year, Dickson earned First Team All-West Region honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), Daktronics, Inc. and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Dickson also received Gold Glove honors at his position this season — he sported a .983 fielding percentage with only nine errors in 520 chances.
Seawolves shortstop Todd, from San Jose, was the 820th overall pick in the baseball draft.
Todd was third on the team in batting with a .332 average, second in home runs with 5 and third with 38 runs batted in for the season.
A senior, Todd earned All-CCAA First Team honors, and was a First Team All-West Region selection by the ABCA, Daktronics, Inc., and the NCBWA.
Sonoma State advanced to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship tournament in Cary, N.C., last week, the Seawolves’ second appearance in the finals.
Taken by the Angels with the 285th overall pick was Mutz, an All-Empire pitcher as an Analy senior three years ago.
Not playing for a college team this season, Mutz last played two seasons ago for Dakota State, an NAIA program in Madison, S.D.
The hard thrower had 65 strikeouts for the year, fourth in the school record books, and was one of the top closers in NAIA play. Mutz was an All-Dakota Athletic Conference selection.

Former All-Empire Baseball Players Earn Postseason Honors at SRJC
Saturday, May 28, 2011 | 7:17 amPosted By Press Democrat Staff Writer Michael Coit:
A trio of Santa Rosa Junior College baseball players who helped lead the Bear Cubs back into the state playoffs earned postseason honors led by All-American outfielder Jayce Ray, from Sonoma Valley High.
Named All-Nor Cal were pitcher Jon Flinn, Cardinal Newman, and Jon Nadale, Petaluma High.
Ray was among the top hitters in the Big 8 Conference, the second toughest league in the California Community College Athletic Association. Ray batted .350, third in the conference. His 5 doubles, 7 triples, 2 home runs and 21 runs batted in added up to the league’s top slugging percentage. Ray also was second in both total bases and runs scored.
Santa Rosa’s pitching ace was Flinn, with a record of 8-4 and a 1.40 earned run average, good for second in the conference. Also second in innings pitched, Flinn had the league’s lowest opponent batting average and also tossed two complete games.
The work horse of the pitching staff was Nadale, whose 18 appearances tied for sixth in the conference. Nadale also had a sparkling 2.01 earned run average.
Another former Empire prep standout to earn All-American recognition was Scott Harkin, a Casa Grande graduate and infielder for Diablo Valley College, the Big 8 Conference champion.

Former Siena recruit to stay at George Mason
Sunday, May 1, 2011 | 11:05 amThe hiring of Paul Hewitt as George Mason’s new head coach was enough to convince New Jersey small forward Vaughn Gray to play there next season.
Gray, who chose George Mason over Siena in the fall, said he’ll honor his letter of intent.
“Yea I’m still gonna be a patriot,” Gray said on his Twitter page today.
Jim Larranaga, who signed Gray, left George Mason recently to become head coach at Miami.
Bill Diamond, his assisant coach at St. Benedict’s Prep, said at the time that Gray intended to stick with his commitment but wanted to meet the new coach first.

Former UAlbany star Gallup returns as a Legend
Thursday, April 14, 2011 | 2:41 amAs a University at Albany basketball player, E.J. Gallup is probably best remembered for scoring 36 points against Siena on Nov. 27, 2001. It’s still the most points by a Great Dane against the Saints since the rivalry began in 1940.
“It was just a fun game,” Gallup, a Gloversville native, recalled Wednesday. “It was one of those nights where I just kind of caught fire and anything that went up was going in. For Albany, it was our first game against Siena (as a Division I program), so it was a big game for the program at the time.”
Despite Gallup’s best efforts, UAlbany lost that game 60-48 to Siena. Then a month later, Gallup was gone. The sophomore decided to leave the program after then-head coach Scott Beeten was forced out and replaced by Will Brown only eight games into the 2001-02 season.
Gallup, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard, will play his first official game in the Capital Region since then when the Albany Legends of the International Basketball League open play on Friday night at Christian Brothers Academy.
They face the Kankakee Soldiers at 7 p.m.
“It’ll be great,” Gallup said. “Even coming down to practice, I see faces I haven’t seen since school. It’s fun to see old friends and people I used to see at Albany. I’m excited to be home.”
Gallup is one of four former UAlbany players on the Legends roster, along with Will Harris, Scotty McRae and Lucious Jordan.
Gallup only played one game for UAlbany under Will Brown, a 61-58 victory at Robert Morris on Dec. 23, 2001. After much wavering, Gallup then transferred to Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C., near his father’s part-time residence in Myrtle Beach.
Gallup said he had already thought about transferring out of struggling UAlbany even before the school fired Beeten.
“Me and Coach Beeten got along great,” Gallup said.
In hindsight, Gallup said he wished he’d finished his sophomore year at UAlbany before leaving.
“I was young,” Gallup said. “When you’re young and you don’t think about things like that, I wish I didn’t let the guys on the team down. But you live and you learn. I’m still friends with the guys who were at Albany when I was at Albany. And I ended up going to Coastal and it worked out good for me. I loved being in Myrtle Beach. Everything happens for a reason, I guess.”
Gallup averaged 17.6 points per game over his 37 career games at UAlbany. He scored a total of 1,359 career points over 87 games before finishing at Coastal Carolina in 2004.
After graduating, Gallup played professionally in Germany and opened a bar-restaurant in Myrtle Beach that he’s since sold. He’s back living in Gloversville.
