BA football opening attracts over 4 dozen applicants
Wednesday, December 28, 2011 | 10:10 pmOver 48 applicants have applied for the vacant Brentwood Academy football coaching job that opened up when Ralph Potter resigned two weeks ago to return to his alma mater, McCallie.
“We’ve had some really strong applicants,” BA headmaster Curt Masters said. “We’re looking to identify the right person. We’re not at the point where we’d want to say anything right now. There’s no need to rush anything right now. We have the time to explore the various candidates. We’re excited about the caliber of applicants we’ve seen.”
Masters said he doesn’t have a timetable on when he would like to fill the position.
“We don’t have anything set,” Masters said. “Sooner would be better than later, but we don’t have to hire a coach by a certain point. The first of February would be great if we could.”
Whoever gets the job will be under a lot of pressure to win, considering BA has won 10 state championships. Only Maryville (13) and Alcoa (12) have won more.

Hotline update: My AP ballot, Stanford ticket sales and a brief look at football recruiting
Thursday, December 15, 2011 | 6:31 pmMy bowl picks will be posted later this week — both the Pac-12 and non-Pac-12 versions — but otherwise the Hotline will be shutting down for a long weekend. Saturday, December 3, 2011 | 3:43 amOnly one Pac-12 game, and it’s the one we’ve been waiting an entire season to see, err … (actually, I bet UCLA makes it a better game than we think). I’ll combine that with four others to finish off the regular season. Watch for the Hotline’s bowl picks after I’ve had a chance to digest the [...]

Cal, Stanford and San Jose State football: Grading the Week
Tuesday, November 22, 2011 | 2:59 pm*** In other news: Arizona announced it has hired former West Virginia and Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez. RichRod is a big name and will most likely energize the fan base — he’ll win the press conference, in other words — but whether he’s a good fit won’t become clear for 2-3 years. He could be [...]

Dixie Heights football coach Tom Spritzky steps down
Saturday, November 12, 2011 | 3:11 pmBy Richard Skinner
Enquirer contributor
Tom Spritzky is stepping down after 17 seasons as head football coach at Dixie Heights.
He told his team the news on Wednesday, the first day Dixie had been back in school since it lost to Lexington Lafayette, 28-14, in the Class 6A playoffs last Friday. Dixie was off school Monday for an in-service day and on Tuesday for election day.
Spritzky would only confirm in an e-mail that he is, “retiring,” and did not want to comment any further.
In his 17 seasons as coach, Spritzky compiled a 107-86 record, including a 10-3 mark in 1999 and an 11-2 record in 2004, when the Colonels upset perennial state big-school power Louisville Trinity in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs (when Kentucky only had four classes).
