Orton close to securing Dallas deal
Saturday, March 17, 2012 | 8:37 amThe Cowboys are finalizing a deal that is perhaps one that has surprised a few fans. Kyle Orton was eventually axed from the starting slot by Denver midway through last season, famously allowing Tim Tebow to inspire a playoff win over the Steelers. It now seems the experienced quarterback is on his way to join the Boys.
After the Broncos having so much success under the services of Tebow, Orton thought his time was done and headed to finish the season with the Kansas City Chiefs. For the Chiefs he threw 252 passes for 1758 as well throwing 9 touchdown passes and gaining a QB rating of 77.8.
For me, this is a very good addition by the Cowboys management. Not many teams would view Orton to have any value but the Cowboys have reacted and have made him theirs. He will provide a solid, established quarterback to play a bench role behind Tony Romo.
I think Orton will a decent job in Dallas if and when required. Ok, he isn’t as good as Romo but he is good enough to exploit all of the dangerous offensive threats the Cowboys pose. The likes of Miles Austin, Dez Bryant and Jason Witten will be big targets for Orton. Laurent Robinson was missing from that list after the recent trade speculation of him joining Jacksonville.
The arrival of Orton probably means the end for Stephen McGee, the youngster who backed up Romo last season. McGee has showed glimpses of potential in his few appearances for Dallas, but I cant see him being a backup quarterback who you can call upon in the tough situations.
The Cowboys are all of a sudden looking pretty active in free agent market and it is something you should keep your eyes open for!

FC Dallas Star Shines for USA
Saturday, August 13, 2011 | 2:15 amWhile soccer flies very much under the DFW sports radar, last nights international friendly vs. hated rivals Mexico had a couple of noteworthy moments for the metroplex. Jurgen Klinsmann took to the sidelines as head coach of the US Men’s National Team last night for the first time after 5+ years of speculation. While the American’s were underwhelming in the first half, they looked like a completely different team in the second half, most notably after the entry of FC Dallas mid-fielder Brek Shea and his Billy Idol-esque hair into the equation in the 60th minute.
The 21-year old shined in only his 3rd CAP for the senior team last night, creating a handful of chances for other players including the equalizer which was tapped in by Robbie Rogers in the 72nd. Shea, born in College Station, has been a standout for FC Dallas this season and was even included in the MLS All-Star squad against Manchester United. Having recently signed a long-term contract with Dallas, we now know there’s at least one reason to drive to Frisco on the weekends…but that’s probably about it.

Melo Trade Great News for Dallas in More Ways Than One
Tuesday, April 12, 2011 | 12:07 amIn case you haven’t heard yet, Carmelo Anthony, Chauncey Billups and Corey Brewer have been traded to the Knicks along with a few others for Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, three draft picks, some cash, and a few spares. In the process, Minnesota gets rid of Brewer in exchange for Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry’s expiring contract.
How is this great for Dallas?
The Denver Nuggets No Longer a Playoff Threat
With Billups and Melo gone, the great super energy threat known as the Nuggets is now deemed unlikely even to cross the threshold into the post-season. Dallas “could” face a rather measly opponent in the first round. Not sure if that’s actually good prep for the next round, but it’s good to know Dallas will likely last to Round Two.
Take Your Pick: Deron Williams or Chris Paul
The Melo move suddenly thrusts Dallas to the forefront for 2012 trades/acquisitions. The Knicks will complete their core of Stoudamire and Anthony with either Deron Williams or Chris Paul. Everyone’s already predicting Dwight Howard will go to the Lakers. And neither Boston, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles, San Antonio, or Oklahoma City need a point guard. Those are the best teams in the league other than Dallas. Who else stands in the way of acquiring the runner up star point guard?
For Dallas’ sake, I hope Chris Paul goes to New York. He’s flashier and more popular, but he’s not built to last like Deron Williams. Williams is certainly more versatile, with remarkable post up moves that most Mavericks could learn from. He’s a ball handler, a penetrator, a scorer, and a leader. Did I mention he’s a local?
Deron Williams is the man you want in Dallas. And he will be available in a year and a half – perfect timing for the end of Jason Kidd’s career to seamlessly transition into the new dawn of Deron-led Mavs immortality. Other than Blake Griffin, I can’t think of a more exciting addition to this Mavericks team.

No Trades for Dallas
Friday, February 25, 2011 | 6:09 pmDon’t be too disappointed.
Since when is no news “news”? Since everyone got giddy after New York initiated a little superstar trade madness.
Sorry to disappoint, but the Mavs will hold onto Caron Butler and hope he can be ready to contribute during the playoffs. If Butler was at 100%, I’d give the Mavs a 50/50 shot at reaching the Finals. As it stands, I’d give ‘em a solid 20%.
The Lakers were the team to beat at the beginning of the season. Now they’re fighting for respect. San Antonio is solid. The most solid team in the league.
Who wouldn’t love to see a Spurs / Mavs slugfest for the Western Conference Championship?

The teams are here, so enough about Dallas already
Tuesday, February 1, 2011 | 12:44 am![]()
Hines Ward will have a few hours of down time this week to work on that ’cowboy’ fashion he was sporting on the Steelers’ charter flight today. The veteran receiver and Pittsburgh’s all-time leading receiver came to town Monday wearing a black cowboy hat, a Western-style black shirt, black cowboy boots and a polished silver belt buckle big enough to pick up FM signals.
Welcome to town, hoss.
Dressing like that will fit right in around Fort Worth, which will host the Steelers for the next week. They don’t call it “Cowtown” for nothing (or nuthun’, as it’s said at the Stockyards).
Should Ward want to update that look and move past the Gunsmoke and Urban Cowboy genre, there are plenty of places around town that would gladly tip their hat to do so.
Both teams arrived today, and thank goodness. Maybe now the local talk can segue to actually being relevant to the game. First off, let’s all take a deep breath and let Ward’s wardrobe selection today be the last time we hear the words “Cowboys” and “Super Bowl” in the same sentence until training camp. Even if it is relating to, uh, fashion.
The local media has made a week-long talk topic of how the Dallas Cowboys won’t be playing in a homefield Super Bowl, but how two franchises that are negatively notorious in Dallas’ postseason past, will.
Ward’s boots were barely off the plane today before he was asked in a midday presser whether it would be cool to win a Super Bowl in the home of the Cowboys, given the rivalry between the teams.
“I don’t think we want to win it just because we’re in Cowboys Stadium. It would be cool just to win it just to win it, to win three Super Bowls for a lot of guys on this team, to win our organization’s seventh Super Bowl,” Ward said.
Pittsburgh has now tied Dallas for most Super Bowl appearances with eight. They already passed the (once) mighty Cowboys for most Super Bowls won with six to Dallas’ five, and could open a bigger gap with a win Sunday. One of Dallas’ proudest claims has now been wiped clean by the Terrible Towel.
The locals have reasons to be bitter. Pittsburgh beat Dallas twice in Super Bowls, but the last time Dallas won a Super Bowl was a 27-17 win over Pittsburgh in SBXXX following the 1995 season. Dallas’ animus for Green Bay stems from the 1960s. It was the Packers who beat Dallas to get to Super Bowls I and II, among a handful of other postseason defeats.
The Steelers have been back now three times since taking their only Super Bowl loss the Cowboys. Dallas has won only two playoff games in the 15 years since, but who’s counting?
“It’s kind of ironic the history between the Cowboys and the Steelers over the years,” Ward said. “I’m pretty sure a lot of Dallas fans don’t want to see Pittsburgh win the Super Bowl on their home field. That’s a motivation but I don’t think that’s the main motivation for guys to try and win it on Cowboys turf. We win it, we want to win it for ourselves, for our city of Pittsburgh and for our organization.”
So there. If Cowboys fans still have venom for Pittsburgh because of the past, save it for the game. The teams are here, so enough about Dallas already, unless we’re talking geography.
Ben Roethlisberger showing up for tomorrow’s Media Day on horseback would just be rubbing it in . . .
