Dudukovich’s top winter sports storylines

The winter sports season ended for me when Summit Country Day defeated Portsmouth for the Division III state basketball championship.

Now that I’ve had a few days to reflect on the past few months, here are my five top winter sports stories.

Title time: The Silver Knights picked up their first state basketball championship in Columbus March 24.

Senior center Holden Hertzel said after the game that he finished the job his dad, Rob Hertzel, who died of cancer in November and was a part of the Summit team that lost in 1980 final, had started 32 years ago.

Junior Kevin Johnson left a lasting impression on the state scene by scoring 11 points and dishing nine assists.

Sophomore Antonio Woods showed his toughness by playing on a bad left knee—an injury he sustained in the state semifinals.

With the win and both Johnson and Woods returning next season, Summit could be a force to reckoned with the next couple of years.

Ready to rumble: Anybody who knew anything about the prep wrestling scene knew Moeller’s Joey Ward and Goshen’s Chaz Gresham would win a ton matches this year.

But the question everyone wanted to know was, could they repeat as state champs?

Ward and Gresham lived up the challenge as both wrestled in two of the most exciting matches at the state tournament in early March.

Ward won the 132-pound crown, while Gresham, won at 182 pounds.

A great run: Who had Fairfield going to the state final this year? Not me, and I guarantee you didn’t either.

But the Indians defied expectations and beat the area’s best in their quest for the state tournament.

I keep thinking back to the Indians’ upset win over La Salle in the tournament. I was covering the state wresting meet in Columbus when I got the news. I’m still stunned.

Fairfield’s dream season was cut two games short—but none-the-less, the 2011-2012 squad will be talked about for years to come.

Record setter: Dan Fleming became La Salle’s all-time career leader in victories when his Lancers team defeated St. Xavier Jan. 27.

It was Fleming’s 335th career victory.

This school is one of the most basketball rich programs in the state and Fleming is at helm.

Stately swimmers: The Ursuline swim team had mountains of expectations at the start of the winter—and why not? The Lions returned several key swimmers from last years team, which finished second at the 2011 state meet.

The Lions lived up to the hype this winter and enjoyed another second place team finish at the state meet.

The squad also made history at the championships as the 200 yard medley relay team of Emily Slabe, Bridget Blood, Corinne Jenkins and Temarie Tomley set a state tournament record with a mark of 1 minute, 42.51 seconds on their way to a first-place finish.

Mavs entering final month of season

This NBA season has flown by and the final month of fixtures is just around the corner. It has been a pretty inconsistent season for the Mavs so far; beating some good teams and losing to some poor sides. It took the team a while to gel with several new recruits including Delonte West, Vince Carter and Lamar Odom.

The Mavs currently sit fifth in the Western Conference with a playoff spot to their name. I think that Dallas will easily clinch a playoff place but going on any further in the post-season will be a tough task. With the ageing roster, minutes on the court are starting to show already in a short season, and the playoffs could be very different from last season.

In my opinion the winner of the NBA title this season will be from the Eastern Conference.  Chicago, Miami and Orlando are all massive contenders and you would be brave to rule New York and Boston out at this stage. I see Oklahoma as the big contender from the West, but I think the whole Conference lacks the depth that the East has.

Can the Mavs win retain their title? I can’t see it happening myself but you never know. With a bit more time to become a stronger unit, they may turn the heat on in the playoffs and anything could happen.

If things go along as they are I can see Dallas playing either the Clippers or Lakers in the first round of the playoffs. One of last season’s most memorable moments was destroying the Lakers 4-0, something that is unthinkable this time around. After making several big recruits, the Clippers are now a formidable force in the West but I think next season will be their season.

In summary, I think the Mavs will grab a playoff spot but what happens from then on in is a mystery at this point.

The Mavs end March with 3 tough fixtures against the Rockets, Heat and Magic, starting with the Rockets tomorrow night.

Siena’s Anosike “really excited” for Ubiles

For junior forward O.D. Anosike and future classes of Siena basketball players, the dream of playing in the NBA will seem just a bit more realistic.

Anosike watched on television on Wednesday night as Edwin Ubiles, his former teammate, became the first Siena product to appear in an NBA regular-season game.

Ubiles played 16 minutes for the Washington Wizards in a 108-89 win over the New Jersey Nets in which he scored four points and grabbed four rebounds.

“It was fun,” Anosike said. “It just shows how capable reaching your goals are when you play for Siena. I’m really excited for Eddie. He’s someone that I got close with the one year he was here (with Anosike), and I’m just really happy for him.”

Maybe Ubiles’ success will cause pro scouts to take a longer look at a Siena prospect like the 6-foot-8 Anosike, who averaged 15 points and a nation-high 12.5 rebounds this season.

“I think Eddie just helped out with the exposure of Siena basketball, definitely putting the school on the map,” Anosike said. “So I mean it’s great for the school and the program.”

Anosike got a chuckle out of Ubiles’ tendency to adjust his shorts during Wednesday’s game, a habit he also had with the Saints. But he was also impressed with Ubiles’ unselfish play.

“I thought he played really well,” Anosike said. “He was trying to just facilitate a little bit and give it to the more veteran players. I thought he played really good defense and I’m hoping he’ll stay on the team.”

The Wizards play again tonight at home against the Indiana Pacers. Ubiles is in the fifth day of a 10-day contract.
