A basketball playoff doubleheader is on tap at Santa Rosa Junior College on Saturday with both the Bear Cubs women and men hosting first round games.
The action at Haehl Pavilion starts at 5:30 p.m. with the women going up against Chabot. Santa Rosa is the fifth seed in the Northern California Regional of the California Community College Athletic Association tournament.
The Santa Rosa men follow with a contest against Feather River. The Bear Cubs are seeded third in the Northern California Regional.
Both squads won Big 8 Conference titles this season.
Going into the playoffs at 24-5, the Bear Cubs men are ranked third in the state and second in northern California.
Leading the men is Sama Taku, who was named Big 8 Conference Most Valuable Player in a vote of league coaches.
Earning all-conference honors were Jordan Salley and Kevin Aronis, who is from Analy High. Honorable mention recognition went to Max Fujii, Analy, and Bobby Sharp, Cardinal Newman.
Santa Rosa men’s coach Craig McMillan was named conference Coach of the Year.
Defending state champions, the Santa Rosa women are 11th in the CCCAA rankings and fifth in the northern California poll, with a 22-6 overall record.
Former Analy standout Jen Tsurumoto was named Most Valuable Player of the Big 8 Conference. Ashley Morgan, from Maria Carrillo, and Anandi Jimenez, out of Montgomery, were named to the all-conference team.
Women’s coach Lacey Campbell was named Big 8 Coach of the Year.

The 2012 version of the World Accenture Match Play sets up to be very interesting this year!. Some great opening round pairings could set down some of the high ranks early. The pairings are based on The World Golf Rankings.

As we all should know this will never pan out #1 Donald vs #2 McIlroy. Or could it? Although most of these match plays starts to whittle its way down with its share of a few “nomads” beating quality players.

Match play is a just another animal that is not like stroke play that just seems to allow the lower ranks to show their value.

Below are the odds that BETONLINE has given us to help us decide who will be over priced or under priced. The 2 heavy favorites to win their first round match are obviously Tiger Woods to beat Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano. According to these odds it should be a slam dunk for the Big Cat to handle Gonzalo. Or will it? Can you perhaps see espn news the next day how Tiger was run down by the unknown Spaniard in the last few holes. It could happen.

The other heavy favorite will be Nick Watney easily over the aging Darren Clarke. Both these matches come in at -220 to a +190.

Betonline has the most contentious match being KJ Choi going up against Kyle Stanley with the odds deadlocked at -110.

From a betting standpoint, there might be some value in some of the lesser known players that probably most Americans don’t know about.

Like the Europeantour’s Race to Dubai standings who have brought over the hot players like Spain’s Cabrera-Bello 5th in the Race to Dubai(RTD) is a +150. Scotland’s Paul Lawrie (3rd RTD) is a +120. Retief Goosen (8th RTD +115) Nicolas Colsaerts (11th RTD) +155.

Players here should not be overlooked because you never heard of them and you will get a good price on for the first round.

Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano will face the Tiger the first round the the WGC Accenture Match Play. Can the unknown beat the Ominous Tiger…. Get 2-1 if you think so.

*

There was a time in the United States when a baby or a small child could travel on the passport of one of their parents, usually the mother. Nowadays, however, even a newborn infant must have a passport of their own. When travel is urgent or imminent, an expedited American pasport for newborn may be obtained. Parents may go through the procedure themselves or they may avail themselves of the services of a specialized agent.

Requirements

Applying for an infant’s passport is a little more complicated than obtaining one for a grown-up. The child’s birth certificate is required, along with proof of parental identification and consent for the infant to travel. Also required are the Social Security Numbers of both parents, proof of travel intent, completed application form, two photographs and payment of the necessary fee. There are five urgency levels for an infant passport, 24-Hour, Next Day, Priority, Rush and Expedited. It requires approximately two weeks for processing and the passport is mailed directly to the parent or parents.

DS-11

The application form is called a DS-11 (Application for a American pass port renewal). This may be obtained from a passport agency or an acceptance facility. It may be filled in online and then printed or it may be printed out first and then filled in by hand. It is essential that the form not be signed until instructed to.

Submission

The passport will be valid for five years and it may not be renewed. The application needs to be submitted in person and the baby itself has to be there.

Photos

Requirements for the two passport photographs are rather stringent. They need to be 2 inches by 2 inches in size with a white or whitish background. The head size has to be between 1 and 1.375 inches with no had or anything else worn on the head. It must be taken no more than six months before the date of the application.

Photo Requirements

The look on the child’s face must be natural. This means there can be no smiling, laughing, screaming or crying. Their mouth must be shut and must not contain a pacifier or anything else. The child should face the camera straight on and looking directly at it. Nothing apart from the infant can be visible in the photo. This includes the parent’s hands, face or arms. There cannot even be a car seat in the picture. It may be easier to pay extra and have this done by a professional photographer.

Citizenship

The infant’s parents must provide proof of their own American citizenship. This can be a naturalization certificate, a valid passport, a Consular Report of Birth, a certificate of citizenship or a certified birth certificate.

When James Neal and Matt Niskanen were traded to Pittsburgh in return for Alex Goligoski, many Stars fans were puzzled about the deal. Personally, I thought it was a good deal at the time as Goligoski brought Dallas the offensive defenseman that they had missed since Sergei Zubov departed in 2008.

Neal was on a line with Brad Richards and Jamie Benn in Dallas, and at different times in the season it was one of the hottest in the NHL. However, James struggled at times and wasn’t getting the points that the Dallas management hoped he would get, which lead to him being traded.

Despite struggling in his first 20 games for the Pens, Neal has thrived this season scoring 30 goals amongst 56 points. He has played some quite sublime hockey, especially on the powerplay, showing exquisite passing as well as a clinical edge in front of goal. This has lead to him signing a new contract with the Pens, which will keep him in Pittsburgh for another 6 years with a million wage.

In his first 23 games for the Stars, Alex Goligoski notched up 15 points, which is very respectable. This season, the American has 24 in 47 games, which is a number that should perhaps be higher. This leads to the question, was the Neal trade a good one? At this stage I still think the Penguins were much better off but as time goes on, Goligoski will continue to build experience and be one of Dallas’ premier defenseman.

Tonight, Golisgoski and the Stars welcome the Nashville Predators to Texas. The Preds find themselves in a playoff spot after having a huge January where they won 11 of 13 games. Goaltender Pekka Rinne has given Nashville a solid platform to work from with a .924 save percentage in 52 games.

The Stars come into tonight’s game on the back of a loss to the Phoenix Coyotes last night, as they were edged out by 2 goals to 1 against their divisional rivals. After the game, coach Gulutzan said, “We played hard, but we need results, It’s a results-based business, and we need results. We need to capitalize, and we can’t make a mistake at the end to give a point away.”

Kari Lehtonen played on the road last night, meaning rookie goalie Richard Bachman may get the start tonight for Dallas. Jamie Benn is still doubtful after getting cut by a skate to the back of the leg against Calgary. Puck drop is at 6pm.

It’s time to evaluate the Washington Redskins football team to decide which players currently on the roster should have a place on the team in 2012 — and what that place should be. Players who should start, be reserves or be cut, we will go through all of them here, touching on every single player currently with the Washington Redskins. All players will receive a verdict that indicates what I think their place on the team, if any, should be in 2012. We began with the positions of Quarterback, Running Back and Tight End.
Former Overton shortstop Mookie Betts will report to spring training with the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday in Fort Myers, Fla.

Betts signed with the Red Sox for 0,000 in August, choosing Boston over the Tennessee Volunteers.

He was drafted in the fifth round as the 172nd pick in June. Betts played in one game with the Red Sox in the Gulf Coast League, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one stolen base.

He learned quickly that professional baseball isn’t the same as high school baseball.

“It was like a big eye-opener — it was a lot different than what I’m used to,” Betts said. “I didn’t have a lot of people to talk to, which is different. The coaching is a lot different. You go from (Overton) Coach (Mike) Morrison who is really a hand-on coach to coaches that kind of sit back and watch you play and expect you to make your own corrections and everything.”

Betts doesn’t know where the Red Sox will assign him for his first full season with the American League organization.

“I think I’ll stay in extended spring training until June and then they’ll assign me somewhere,” Betts said.

Betts, a former Tennesean All-Midstate basketball player, helped coach the Bobcats varsity and freshman basketball teams during the offseason.

“I actually really enjoyed it a lot because I love basketball and I love being around it,” Betts said. “Being able to coach the guys that I played with last year — I really enjoyed it.”

Betts hit .509 with 39 RBI and 29 stolen bases for Overton (31-5) last season.

The Maroone High School Gridiron Report wastes no time getting a jump on the Class of 2013 and the off season this Wednesday night on WQAM (560 AM) Radio.

Joining Larry Blustein from 9-10 p.m. will be Miami Monsignor Pace safety/linebacker Anthony Walker, Jr., Davie University School receiver Jordan Cunningham and South Florida Express 7-on-7 founder and team organizer Brett Goetz.

ALL-STATE – ALREADY
While many recruiting analysts were looking at the dozens of other top-flight players for the Class of 2013 in South Florida, many missed out on the 6-2, 200-pound Walker, who was good enough to make second team All-State this past season.

One of the top players in this class, this is an athlete who is not finished growing. That’s why playing safety may be in his immediate future, but perhaps not at the next level where he may end up playing linebacker.

He is a true play-making sleeper in this class, who already gave national, regional and state media a chance to see what he could do in a pair of shorts and a t-shirt.

WHAT A CATCH
Two years ago, as a sophomore, in the state championship game, this was a player who showed the state he was going to be an elite prospect in the Class of 2013.

Fast forward two years, as he heads toward his final season at the high school level, and little has changed for this impressive 6-2, 185-pounder, who has been coached and taught by former UM standout Kevin Beard.

As good as he is on the football field, Cunningham has also been very solid in the classroom as well, which enhances his overall recruiting package.

STILL HELPING KIDS
Four years ago when he had an idea to get involved with organizing an off season travel 7-on-7 all-star team, Goetz had little idea how big the team and concept would be.

With a number of teams just in South Florida alone, Goetz finds himself competing for the same players he had automatically attracted in the past.

While other teams do provide a place for the athletes to play, Goetz and his staff, which includes former Dolphins Patrick Surtain and Sam Madison as well as other former NFL and collegiate players, has provided more of a total experience. They get top-flight instruction as well as exposure – statewide and nationally.
