Patience > Quarterback
Wednesday, February 22, 2012 | 3:51 amQuarterback is the main topic of discussion when the Redskins come up. Whether it be Fox 5, Comcast, the Junkies, the Examiner, ESPN or the NFL Network it doesn’t matter, the Skins are in the market for a QB! We don’t know just who yet, but we know for sure the team will be adding at least one new signal caller before training camp. General Manager Bruce Allen was asked about the team’s plans on Redskins Nation; “We have a game plan on what to do and obviously our game plan has to have alternate routes on it based on what other clubs do. We [...]

Ex-Star Neal puts pen to paper
Monday, February 20, 2012 | 1:57 pmWhen James Neal and Matt Niskanen were traded to Pittsburgh in return for Alex Goligoski, many Stars fans were puzzled about the deal. Personally, I thought it was a good deal at the time as Goligoski brought Dallas the offensive defenseman that they had missed since Sergei Zubov departed in 2008.
Neal was on a line with Brad Richards and Jamie Benn in Dallas, and at different times in the season it was one of the hottest in the NHL. However, James struggled at times and wasn’t getting the points that the Dallas management hoped he would get, which lead to him being traded.
Despite struggling in his first 20 games for the Pens, Neal has thrived this season scoring 30 goals amongst 56 points. He has played some quite sublime hockey, especially on the powerplay, showing exquisite passing as well as a clinical edge in front of goal. This has lead to him signing a new contract with the Pens, which will keep him in Pittsburgh for another 6 years with a million wage.
In his first 23 games for the Stars, Alex Goligoski notched up 15 points, which is very respectable. This season, the American has 24 in 47 games, which is a number that should perhaps be higher. This leads to the question, was the Neal trade a good one? At this stage I still think the Penguins were much better off but as time goes on, Goligoski will continue to build experience and be one of Dallas’ premier defenseman.
Tonight, Golisgoski and the Stars welcome the Nashville Predators to Texas. The Preds find themselves in a playoff spot after having a huge January where they won 11 of 13 games. Goaltender Pekka Rinne has given Nashville a solid platform to work from with a .924 save percentage in 52 games.
The Stars come into tonight’s game on the back of a loss to the Phoenix Coyotes last night, as they were edged out by 2 goals to 1 against their divisional rivals. After the game, coach Gulutzan said, “We played hard, but we need results, It’s a results-based business, and we need results. We need to capitalize, and we can’t make a mistake at the end to give a point away.”
Kari Lehtonen played on the road last night, meaning rookie goalie Richard Bachman may get the start tonight for Dallas. Jamie Benn is still doubtful after getting cut by a skate to the back of the leg against Calgary. Puck drop is at 6pm.

Previewing the 2012 Redskins: Special Teams
Monday, February 20, 2012 | 1:19 amIt’s time to evaluate the Washington Redskins football team to decide which players currently on the roster should have a place on the team in 2012 — and what that place should be. Players who should start, be reserves or be cut, we will go through all of them here, touching on every single player currently with the Washington Redskins. All players will receive a verdict that indicates what I think their place on the team, if any, should be in 2012. We began with the positions of Quarterback, Running Back and Tight End. We completed our preview of the offense [...]

Cuban Still Upset By CP3 Trade?
Wednesday, February 15, 2012 | 8:19 pmMark Cuban is, in my opinion, one of the best owners in professional sports. So, if he’s still fuming about a trade that he didn’t really take part in (except that he partially owns just a little bit of the New Orleans Hornets,) you know that it must be serious. When you read these soundbites, you will see why the Mavs are so good and why we can all bask in how good the Mavs are.
“I don’t think it was about the Lakers, per se. I think it was just the way they did the deal, which was ridiculous. I don’t think it was about which team. I think it was the fact that, even with the Clippers, we just went through this whole (collective bargaining agreement) and said the incumbent team still has the advantage and then the team the league owns (wimps) out. And look how it’s worked out for them.”
“Bad management gets you bad results.”
“It’s not about being better or worse. It’s hard to judge any trade until it’s done. It’s about the concepts involved and the integrity of what we went through for the CBA. That’s what it’s all about. (The league office) screwed the pooch either way.”
“The whole idea about having most of these rules is that you’d have an advantage and wouldn’t have to trade people.”
This line of thinking makes the Mavericks a better team. We should all be very glad that Cuban thinks this way. Notice how his interest is in how the league is managed so that ALL of the products are better. He’s pleased that his product doesn’t suck, but it still ticks him off that other teams are terrible because he knows it still affects his image and the image of his team.
Just remember, good management gets you good results and that’s what Cuban provides. Thank God for that.

Teahen Offers Versatility
Friday, February 10, 2012 | 2:06 pmIt isn’t grabbing headlines, but the Nationals signing of Mark Teahen could have an impact. Teahan can play 1st, 2nd, 3rd and the corner outfield spots and swings from the left side. The 30-year-old Teahan is coming off his worst season, but is worth the minor league contract gamble. Mark DeRosa appears the favorite for the Nats utility role, but Teahan provides a fall back option in case of injury. Teahan was featured in Moneyball, as Oakland General Manager Billy Beane felt Teahan had the potential to be the next Jason Giambi. With a strong spring, it is possible that [...]

Texas Rangers And Elvis Andrus Agree On New Deal
Thursday, February 9, 2012 | 12:11 amAccording to ESPN, the Texas Rangers have avoided arbitration with shortstop Elvis Andrus, agreeing Tuesday to a three-year deal worth between -15 million.
Andrus, 23, will avoid arbitration for the remainder of his career with Texas thanks to the contract. He batted .279 with five homers and 60 RBIs with 37 stolen bases in 2011.
It was Andrus’ third season in the league as the club’s starting shortstop. He was second in the AL rookie of the year balloting in 2009, hitting .267 with six homers and 40 RBIs with 33 stolen bases. He had a .265 average with no homers and 35 RBIs with 32 stolen bases in 2010.
The Rangers still have two other players who have scheduled arbitration hearings; catcher Mike Napoli and outfielder Nelson Cruz.
Cruz, whose eight postseason homers last year included six in the AL Championship Series with a game-ending grand slam in Game 2, is asking for .5 million while the Rangers are offering .5 million. Cuz made .65 million last year, when he hit .263 with 29 homers and 87 RBIs in 124 games.
Napolim who had a career year in 2001, hitting .320 with 30 homers and 75 RBIs in 113 games in his first season with Texas. He is asking for .5 million while the Rangers have offered .3 million. Napolim made .8 million last season.

Hail The East!
Monday, February 6, 2012 | 9:42 pmThe NFC East has won the Super Bowl again! I know, it’s not the Cowboys, but there is something to be said for divisional pride. I have a friend who is a lifelong Redskins fan, and he posted on Facebook, “Hail to the Redskins. We beat the Super Bowl champions twice this season.” He’s right, and I think he’s got a point about divisional pride. The NFC East is pretty stinking good.
Now, what do you do when your divisional rivals are winning and you are not? Copy them. That’s pretty much the only way to do this. You can pretend like it doesn’t matter and you can continue to go about your business as you always do, but it might be smart to start to do business the way they are doing it.
Now, you can’t get Eli Manning, but there is this other thing out there…Peyton Manning. Since we’re talking about copying the most successful team in your division, get a quarterback called Manning, get a GM that is as wise as Jerry Reese, put in roleplayers like the Giants do, and make sure that you always have depth on defense. Sure, DeMarcus Ware is awesome, but we’re talking about major depth.
So, could the Cowboys copy the Giants? Yes. Will they? No. However, getting a Manning for a quarterback, even if it only lasts for a couple of seasons, might be enough to squeak out a Super Bowl title before he retires. You know Peyton wants to win another one, so why wouldn’t you strongly consider it? I know, I know, you’ve got Romo, but, come on. You could draft RG3, sit him behind Manning, waive Romo, and then all would be well.
It would be a very good beginning for a very proud franchise that is in the best division in football today.

Peyton Manning has no retirement plans
Wednesday, February 1, 2012 | 3:26 pmThere have been some rumors swirling around the Web that Indianapolis Colts QB Peyton Manning may be considering retirement, after missing all of last season recovering from neck surgery. Manning laid those rumors to rest today, denying any thought of retirement. In fact, Manning said he feels pretty good and is right on schedule. I really feel good. I continue to make progress every day. Everything that the doctors have told me has been on point, which is encouraging to me. I just had a great day today with rehab, just got back from the facility, and that’s what we [...]

Terps Host Hokies At Comcast Center
Sunday, January 29, 2012 | 11:40 amMaryland hosts Virginia Tech this afternoon as part of an ACC Game of the Week doubleheader. After starting conference play 2-0, the Terrapins have dropped three straight. Virginia Tech is also struggling, having dropped five of their last six. Maryland coach Mark Turgeon expects seven-foot-one freshman center Alex Len to come off the bench for the second straight game. Turgeon spoke with the Baltimore Sun’s Jeff Barker. “We brought him off the bench (against Duke). I’m pretty sure I’m going to do that again tomorrow and just see if that helps him relax. He has been fouling too much. I think it’s [...]
