Mavs entering final month of season

Tuesday, March 27, 2012 | 8:32 am

This NBA season has flown by and the final month of fixtures is just around the corner. It has been a pretty inconsistent season for the Mavs so far; beating some good teams and losing to some poor sides. It took the team a while to gel with several new recruits including Delonte West, Vince Carter and Lamar Odom.

The Mavs currently sit fifth in the Western Conference with a playoff spot to their name. I think that Dallas will easily clinch a playoff place but going on any further in the post-season will be a tough task. With the ageing roster, minutes on the court are starting to show already in a short season, and the playoffs could be very different from last season.

In my opinion the winner of the NBA title this season will be from the Eastern Conference.  Chicago, Miami and Orlando are all massive contenders and you would be brave to rule New York and Boston out at this stage. I see Oklahoma as the big contender from the West, but I think the whole Conference lacks the depth that the East has.

Can the Mavs win retain their title? I can’t see it happening myself but you never know. With a bit more time to become a stronger unit, they may turn the heat on in the playoffs and anything could happen.

If things go along as they are I can see Dallas playing either the Clippers or Lakers in the first round of the playoffs. One of last season’s most memorable moments was destroying the Lakers 4-0, something that is unthinkable this time around. After making several big recruits, the Clippers are now a formidable force in the West but I think next season will be their season.

In summary, I think the Mavs will grab a playoff spot but what happens from then on in is a mystery at this point.

The Mavs end March with 3 tough fixtures against the Rockets, Heat and Magic, starting with the Rockets tomorrow night.

Stars fall to Canucks, lose top spot in Pacific

Saturday, March 24, 2012 | 4:44 am

In an incredibly tight Western Conference, it is crucial for Dallas to have a good run in of results to try and seal a playoff spot for the first time in 3 seasons. However, the Stars unfortunately dropped 2 points last night in a tight game with the Vancouver Canucks.

In the early stages of the first period, the Stars couldn’t convert their pressure into a goal and found themselves a goal down with 6 minutes gone. Some nice puck distribution by the Canucks lead to Mason Raymond being presented with an open net and a simple finish.

It was a very edgy game, with lots of players from both teams having a push and a shove after the whistle. After a scoreless second frame, the Stars found themselves 2 goals down early in the third courtesy of some poor defending to allow Kevin Bieska tap home a rebound. Dallas got back into it through a very scrappy goal from Vernon Fiddler with 12 minutes to play, but the Canucks held out for the win.

So, what does that mean for Dallas now? They are going to have to play their hearts out if they want a playoff spot. They are still very much in the hunt for top spot in the Pacific after losing it to Los Angeles last night.

The Stars have to play their hearts out because their schedule is a very, very tough one from now on in. They play the Flames (x2), Oilers, Canucks, Sharks (x2), Predators and Blues. 8 massive games remaining and I think the Stars need to win at least 5 of these to be in with a shout.

I think they have a good chance of making the top 8. The goaltending unit is looking pretty strong and if they do make the playoffs, Richard Bachman will provide a much-needed rest for Kari Lehtonen when needed. The top 2 lines are also looking pretty dangerous with the puck going forward and with a bit of help from the third and fourth lines, they could be a real force in the playoffs.

The Stars look to get right back on track tomorrow when they take on the Calgary Flames, another team fighting for the playoffs, at the American Airline Center. Puck drop is an early one at 1pm.

Massive game for the Stars tonight

Wednesday, March 21, 2012 | 1:02 am

It is this point in the season that a lot of games become ‘must win’ games. Tonight is one of those for Dallas, as the Stars and Phoenix battle it out at the American Airlines Center in Texas.

Thanks to the Ducks beating the San Jose Sharks last night, the Stars still occupy top spot in the Pacific division. Phoenix has the same amount of points as Dallas but sit behind them in the table because the Stars have won more games over the course of the season. This is why tonight’s game is so huge and a big 4 pointer for both sides is up for grabs.

After a sublime run of form, the Dallas Stars have grinded to a halt in the past few days, losing their last 2 games comprehensively. The Coyotes have also lacked momentum lately, going 3-5-2 in their last 10 games.

The Stars have been given a huge boost ahead of the encounter tonight as Sheldon Souray returns to the line up. Souray has been consistently good this season for Dallas and he will be key in their final push for a playoff spot. His return probably means that Adam Pardy will be a healthy scratch for the game.

It is a battle of the goaltenders tonight as Kari Lehtonen and Mike Smith get the starts for the respective teams. Both teams have been heavily reliant on their goalies and they have played a pivotal role in where their sides sit in the league table. Lehtonen and Smith both have identical save percentages at .924 but Smith has one more shutout than Kari with 5.

The Coyotes have some injury worries ahead of the game as Radim Vrbata, Taylor Pyatt and Adrian Aucoin are all doubts.

I cant wait for tonights game which is the biggest of the season for Dallas so far. Both teams are going to be desperate for the win, which should make it a thrilling contest. Puck drop is at 7pm.

Orton close to securing Dallas deal

Saturday, March 17, 2012 | 8:37 am

The Cowboys are finalizing a deal that is perhaps one that has surprised a few fans. Kyle Orton was eventually axed from the starting slot by Denver midway through last season, famously allowing Tim Tebow to inspire a playoff win over the Steelers. It now seems the experienced quarterback is on his way to join the Boys.

After the Broncos having so much success under the services of Tebow, Orton thought his time was done and headed to finish the season with the Kansas City Chiefs. For the Chiefs he threw 252 passes for 1758 as well throwing 9 touchdown passes and gaining a QB rating of 77.8.

For me, this is a very good addition by the Cowboys management. Not many teams would view Orton to have any value but the Cowboys have reacted and have made him theirs. He will provide a solid, established quarterback to play a bench role behind Tony Romo.

I think Orton will a decent job in Dallas if and when required. Ok, he isn’t as good as Romo but he is good enough to exploit all of the dangerous offensive threats the Cowboys pose. The likes of Miles Austin, Dez Bryant and Jason Witten will be big targets for Orton. Laurent Robinson was missing from that list after the recent trade speculation of him joining Jacksonville.

The arrival of Orton probably means the end for Stephen McGee, the youngster who backed up Romo last season. McGee has showed glimpses of potential in his few appearances for Dallas, but I cant see him being a backup quarterback who you can call upon in the tough situations.

The Cowboys are all of a sudden looking pretty active in free agent market and it is something you should keep your eyes open for!

Terry Speaks Up

Friday, March 16, 2012 | 7:58 pm

I never thought I’d hear this coming out of the Mavs’ locker room, but I think that it’s time to concede that, in some way, the season has been conceded.  Plus, I think hearing this from Jason Terry is especially shocking because he’s not a major, vocal guy.  He’s just a veteran who likes winning.  So, when he gets upset about how the team is run, you know something is going on:

“Not a vote of confidence at all.  We already know that management told us they’re playing for next year, but everybody in this locker room is trying to win this year and see what happens.”

Ouch.  Basically, pointing the finger at management and calling them quitters.  Now, I don’t know if the Mavs front office has conceded the season or not.  I don’t know what they talk about, and I’ve never actually even been to Dallas.  So, there’s no way to know for sure, but if the players feel it, then something is wrong.

What could possibly be wrong with a team that is well-run?  Losing.

Just as winning cures all wounds, losing can open up new ones.  So, every time the Mavs lose, they think more and more about how they have perceived that the front office is not trying.  I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, but the die has been cast and someone needs to go pick it up.

It doesn’t really matter if Mark Cuban comes out and half-apologizes for the season or says they’re pressing on, or whatever.  It only matters that the players believe that they have something to play for.  Sure, they’re trying, but if they feel unsupported, it’s going to be a long rest of the season and offseason.

I hope that someone can come in and mend this wound, because JT sounds upset, and I don’t know how long the Mavs can go on with the veterans angry like this.

Cowboys Sign Orton?

Thursday, March 15, 2012 | 6:44 pm

Anybody else confused by this? I know that Kyle Orton doesn’t see many places where he can go because of RG3, Andrew Luck, and Matt Flynn, but, why would he go to the Cowboys?  Is it a steady paycheck?  Is he done with trying to be the golden boy?  Does he think he has a chance at winning the job in Dallas?  I mean, did he get reassurances, or is he just thinking that he can pull it together in camp and win the job or wait for Tony Romo to get hurt or benched so he can swoop in and take over?

Honestly, I guess he could wait for Romo to get hurt, which is likely, and he might have a chance to get the job and keep it.  The only problem is that Jerry Jones seems to be sold on Romo.

Let’s say you’re all in favor of this and you want more than anything for Romo to leave or lose his starting gig.  You have no reason to believe that this is definitely going to happen.  Sure, it could happen, but this is not a guarantee.

Let’s say that Orton doesn’t mind to be a backup.  Did the Cowboys just get a really strong backup?  I think they did.  From an offensive-planning perspective, then you have made a very good decision.  If the idea is to have a competition for the starting quarterback job, it has to be handled properly.

No messing around in the media.  No trying to make it so that the two guys are actually competing against one another.  Just, a competition for quarterback.  That’s all that the ‘Boys need.  Either Romo gets better and the team improves or Orton takes the job and the team improves.  This is a very good move for the Cowboys.  Very wise.

Stoglin And Faust Earn ACC Honors

Wednesday, March 7, 2012 | 8:43 am

Terrell Stoglin earned second team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors while Nick Faust has been voted onto the ACC All-Freshman team. Stoglin, a sophomore guard from Tucson, Ariz., finished the regular season as the leading scorer in the league with a 21.2 points-per-game average. He was joined on the second team by Kendall Marshall of North Carolina, Michael Snaer of Florida State, C.J. Leslie of NC State and Erick Green of Virginia Tech. Should he remain atop the ACC’s scoring list, it would be the sixth time a Maryland player has led the league in scoring. Joe Smith (1995), Walt Williams (1993), [...]

Nats baseball about to get underway

Friday, March 2, 2012 | 2:27 am

The Washington Nationals will kick off their 2012 baseball pre-season tomorrow against Georgetown University.  That will be followed up on Saturday with the Grapefruit League opener on Saturday against the Houston Astros.  Obviously, the single biggest question this spirng training for the Nationals is whether 2010 first round pick 19 year old Bryce Harper will make the opening day roster with the Nationals.   The Nationals will likely give Harper every opportunity to make the club, but Harper has to seize that opporunity.  Harper will start in both upcoming weekend games.  Danny Knobler from CBS Sports is clear in his opinion on [...]

UPDATE: Evgeny Kuznetsov’s agnet told Sport Express in Russia that the current diagnosis is a severe soft tissue bruise that could keep Kuzie sidelined for three weeks.  If that is the case, the Capitals dodged a heckuva bullet.  UPDATE #2: An MRI was negative for ligament tears.  Good news for the Capitals.  —— If the Washington Capitals were not reeeling enough from injuries to Nicklas Backstro, Alex Ovechkin, and Mike Green combined with the stunning collapse of the team on ice, another serious blow landed to the chin of the roganziation.   Super prospect and first round draft selection Evgeny Kuznetsov, who had [...]
