As good as Anosike’s been, Machado looks like MAAC POY

Thursday, March 1, 2012 | 1:50 pm

LOUDONVILLE – Last season, Siena forward Ryan Rossiter won Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Year for a team with a losing record.

Junior forward O.D. Anosike, boasting similar credentials, is bidding to join his former teammate in that rare company when the MAAC announces its major awards on Thursday in Springfield, Mass.

However, it doesn’t appear that Anosike will accomplish the feat, even though he’s averaging a double-double and ranks in the top two in the country in rebounding, just as Rossiter did a year ago.

Iona senior point guard Scott Machado is the solid favorite for the award after leading the Gaels to the MAAC regular-season championship.

Siena coach Mitch Buonaguro, who can’t vote for his own player, cast his ballot for Machado, who’s leading the country with 10.1 assists per game.

“He makes them go,” Buonaguro said. “When he’s not out there, (more…)

Pac-12 basketball ratings: Was a UCLA story published somewhere recently?

Thursday, March 1, 2012 | 1:13 am

If you haven’t heard, Sports Illustrated published a lengthy account — by  Pulitzer Prize-winner George Dohrmann — of the behind-the-scenes problems at UCLA. Eight thoughts (in honor of the 8-clap): 1. If you follow the Bruins closely, the piece probably confirms your suspicions: Ben Howland isn’t exactly a players’ coach, Drew Gordon wasn’t exactly the [...]

Stanford football: News and notes from Shaw’s pre-spring press conference

Saturday, February 25, 2012 | 7:36 am

Cardinal coach David Shaw held a 30-minute press conference Thursday to address spring practice, which begins Monday and runs (with a break in the middle) through April 14. *** The discussion began, not surprisingly, with questions about inside linebacker Shayne Skov — his recovery from knee surgery and his recent DUI arrest. Shaw said the [...]

There will be a senior night at UAlbany

Saturday, February 18, 2012 | 11:33 am

ALBANY — There is not a senior on the UAlbany basketball roster, but there will be a Senior Night at SEFCU Arena Saturday night.

Tradition dictates that, on the final home game of the regular season, the home team honors their seniors for four years of dedication.

That will happen before the Danes play Rider in a BracketBuster game at 7 p.m. Saturday. Danes’ coach Will Brown will give a little sendoff to senior managers Zack Marcus and Simon Clement. But there will also be a little bit of hoopla for 5-foot-9 guard Jacob Iati.

Academically, Iati is a senior, and he’ll graduate with his class in May. Because he transferred here from High Point University, he had to sit out a year, and does have one more season of eligibility left. He won’t use it.

Instead, Iati will enter grad school next semester and become a member of Brown’s staff as a graduate assistant. He will take the place of Josh Pelletier, who will finish his grad studies this spring. The term for a grad student assistant is two years.

Iati said he thought long and hard about coming back and playing one more year, but, after talking with his family and Brown, he took a different route. His brother, Jon, played for the Danes (2003-08) and left as the school’s 19th all-time leading scorer (1,142 points).

“A lot of this has to do with my education,” said Iati, who has been thrust into the starting lineup because of a boatload of injuriesto the Danes late in the season.  “It was a real tough decision. I sat down with my family and we talked about all the different scenarios. I will find out if it was the best decision in the next two years. I think it will be.”

Iati had played sparingly for most of this year before the injuries hit. He started in the Danes’ 50-47 home loss against Vermont Wednesday and logged a career-high 37 minutes. He scored nine points.

He’ll start against Rider, but not because he is playing his last home game. The Danes need him. And, when the season is over, he’ll move on.

“Jacob is a smart kid,” Brown said. “He told me this is what he wanted to do. He will be giving up his final year of playing but he is looking at the big picture.”

Iati’s major is business administration with an emphasis on finance and management.

“You are always going to miss playing when it’s done,” Iati said.  “I have been playing since I was so young … people who have played college basketball and are now in their 50s … they miss it. But I have to think about what I am going to do with my life. ”

So, Iati will take his final home bow Saturday night when he is introduced to the SEFCU crowd. He’ll be joined by his parents Frank and Lynne. And then he will play one more time in front of the home crowd.

Cousins leads Chaminade University in scoring and rebounding, helping pace the Silverswords to second place in the Pac West. The former All-Empire player from Cardinal Newman is second in the conference averagingboth 17 points and 8 rebounds a game.

Noisat is Dominican University’s top scorer with 11 points per contest to go with his team leading 7 rebounds a game. The onetime Elsie Allen great has become the Penguins anchor in posting wins.

The pair, who workout together over summers, met in a league contest at Dominican earlier in January. Chaminade held on for the win. Cousins had 11 points and 7 rebounds. Noisat recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. The teams meet again in Honolul in February.

Player Of The Week Honors For Herold

Wednesday, February 15, 2012 | 8:19 pm

Posted By Press Democrat Staff Writer Michael Coit:

Leading the Sonoma State men into the conference playoffs, Justin Herold has netted player of the week honors.

The former Maria Carrillo standout is the California Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Player of the Week after leading Sonoma State to a split of last week’s home games.

Herold helped Sonoma State clinch a conference tournament berth, scoring the game winning shot in a one point victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills. He totaled 25 points and 5 rebounds in the win.

Earlier, Herold again led Sonoma State with 26 points and 10 rebounds in a setback against Cal State Los Angeles. Over the two games, Herold went 20-for-27 (74.1%) from the field and a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line.

For the season, Herold leads Sonoma State averaging 14 points and 6 rebounds per contest. He is fourth in the conference in blocked shots.

Two teammates also have been named conference player of the week this season, Steven Pratt and Will Olsem.

The Seawolves have turned around their season with Herold playing a big role in the resurgence. Herold sat out the first semester after transferring from Cal Poly Pomona.

Sonoma State has won 9 of the past 11 games to raise its record to 13-9 overall and 11-7 in the conference. Now alone in fifth place, Sonoma State hopes to move up into the top four so the Seawolves can host a conference playoff game.

League play resumes Thursday with Sonoma State at Pomona and again on the road Saturday at San Francisco State. The Seawolves finish with a pair of home games with the conference tournament set to start Feb. 28.
